Inspired by our old white schoolhouse, I started this business when I was in the throes of severe sleep deprivation following the birth of our twins. How I found the time (or the will) to start it up, I still don’t know. I vaguely remember sitting in the kitchen in the middle of the night between feedings when I absolutely should have been sleeping. Instead I was creating a logo for myself. I woke up that morning and opened my computer to see if it was just a dream and there it was - my logo staring me in the face. So I went for it. White Schoolhouse Décor. The bell in my logo is the bell that currently sits in front of our little white 1800's schoolhouse.
As a graphic designer, I was looking for ways to put my creative edge to work. I started doing image transfers, practicing the technique, and practicing some more. I was happy with the outcome, but as time went on and my perfectionist side started to nag, I knew I wanted to make some changes. I was getting frustrated and started second guessing myself, wondering if this just wasn’t the time to be doing this since the kids are still so little. Passion and the desire for a project outside of "momming" won out and I pushed on. One thing I remained firm on is that I still wanted to be able to see the natural wood grain behind all of my images, but I didn’t want any loss of image clarity and vibrancy. It was a long road of research, setbacks, waiting and trial and error to find what I’ve been looking for, but I finally found my golden ticket.
The result is a wall hanging with professionally printed images on a transparent substrate and face mounted to a sheet of glass, essentially making it look as though the image is directly printed on the glass. I then “float” mount the glass, allowing the wood grain to backlight the image, giving them a whole other level of interest, uniqueness, and depth. They have a modern/rustic/industrial feel that compliments any type of space. The images remain sharp and vibrant with excellent clarity. Something I’m most proud of is being fortunate enough to have found local materials and resources (I’m talking, within 10 miles of our house!)
There truly is no limit to what image you can make into a wall hanging. My technique shows the wood grain through your image in the light and white areas of the photo, and gives it a more earthy and natural look. I will edit your photo to maximize the interplay of the image with the wood grain. The wood is protected by two coats of satin polycrylic, and a sheet of glass with seamed edges to protect the image. All wall hangings come ready to hang with keyhole slots so it lays flush to the wall. This is a high quality product that reflects the utmost attention to detail, yet maintains a handcrafted feel. The heartbeat of small business is word of mouth referrals, and I am committed to making sure you are completely happy with your project in the hopes that you feel compelled to share with your family and friends!
